Madeline Iva!
Madeline Iva grew up in a family of women who regularly traded brown grocery bags full of all kinds of romance.  As a way of enduring the incivilities of high school, Madeline switched to reading elegant and refined regency romances, which is how she developed her fanatical love for Georgette Heyer.  As an adult, Madeline discovered erotic romance and began writing them in 2010. 

Now Madeline writes about smart, outspoken women, the brooding heroes who are drawn to them, and the feisty sex that follows.  She writes paranormal, fantasy, and contemporary erotic romance—and sometimes a blend of all three.

Madeline’s first story “Sexsomnia” is included in THE LADY SMUT BOOK OF DARK DESIRES, published by Harper Impulse in 2014.  Madeline also started Love Fest, a day of romance panels at Virginia Festival of the Book.  In 2013, Madeline and two friends co-founded LadySmut.com, a romance blog devoted to all things intelligent and sexy.  She still posts about romance and men every Thursday. In the summer of 2015 she taught at the Mid-Atlantic Fiction Writer’s Institute.

The TRP Author Interview

• How would publishing this book change your life? (What are your goals as an author?)

Romance books have always been important to me, because when I’ve been going through really difficult times in my life (we’re talking hours in the ER waiting room) reading romance provided me with the light, warm, funny escapism that I so desperately needed.  Without the enjoyment and hope that romance novels provided, I’m not really sure if I’d be here right now.  That said, I want to write that same kind of book that helped me get through the hard times, and in this way pay it forward. So many woman are slogging through stressful events and need a little lift.  I hope I can give that to them.

• Have you been published before?

I started a blog with some other romance writers called LadySmut.com.  We wanted to do something to celebrate our blog’s first anniversary so we wrote an anthology and Harper Impulse published it in 2014.  My first published romance story “Sexsomnia” is included in that anthology.  It’s a story about a woman who needs to uncover the mystery of what she’s doing at night and with who(m). 

• What about Troll River Publishing made you want to sign a contract?

I met Elizabeth SaFleur at a Lady Smut Girl’s Night Out party one fall and she was positively glowing with enthusiasm over working with Stephy at Troll River.  I see Troll River as a new kind of publisher, a hybrid publisher.  One who aims to make authors content in a publishing world seething with chaos and change.  And I just adore Stephy now that she’s my editor too.

• Who would be interested in reading your books?

Anyone who likes intelligent, sexy fun would enjoy my books.  My heroines are larger than life for the most part.  They know what they want and they’re determined to get it.  The heroes meanwhile, tend to be the brooding, smart types.  I enjoy men who aren’t afraid to take on someone with big curves and killer charisma.  I like a man who likes a woman with a mind of her own, of course.  She may not be perfect, but he’s up for the adventure.

After watching too many seasons of the Bachelor, I’m also drawn to exploring how women go after the men they want.  Often these same women are a little squirmier when it comes to being on the receiving end of love.  I relish those uncomfortable moments where an independent, strong woman has to accept someone looking after her for a change.

Finally, is there anything better than the physical bond great sex can bring?  When a couple starts feeling like two parts of a whole, when they’re intellectual and intimate emotional partners—it’s perfection.

• What has been the greatest challenge in the journey of writing and publishing?

I want to say ‘what challenges?’ because it’s been such an awesome adventure, but then I have to laugh. The romance world is so fun, sometimes the hardest part is the need to stay at home revising, revising, revising when you’d rather be out talking to your writer friends and having fun.
